 Conjunction

  • A conjunction is a word used to join words, phrases, clauses or sentences together. 
e.g. and, but, because, therefore, although, when, either.....or, neither.....nor, not only.... but also, both...and, etc.

    There are many other parts of speech also that does the work of connecting but to identify conjunction in them remember that "conjunction does only the work of connecting ."  Other parts of speech connects words or phrases or sentences and also do the work of modification.


Types of conjunctions:-
There are two types of conjunctions mainly.

  1. Co-ordinating conjunction
  2. Subordinating conjunction
(i) Co-ordinating conjunction:-
                                                         The conjunction which joins the two items of equal rank is called a co-ordinating conjunction.
e.g. and, but, or, also, either....or, neither....nor, etc.
  • Ram and Lakshman are brothers.
  • Give me a pen or pencil.
(ii) Subordinating conjunction:-
                                                            The conjunction which joins a subordinate clause to a principal clause is called a subordinating conjunction.
e.g. when, that, if, because, before, after, unless, until, till, etc.
  • She says that Gita was ill.
  • She likes him because he is brave.
Note : Subordinating clause is also called dependent clause.

Parts of speech :-                                           All the English words are divided into eight groups according to the work they do in the sentence, each group is called parts of speech. They are....... Noun Pronoun adjective Verb Adverb Preposition Conjunction Interjection Thus there are eight types of parts of speech. We can only determine the words by seeing it in the sentence that from which category the word belongs to. Because the same word may be belonging to the different parts of speech in the different sentence.
