Case

  • Case:- Case is the grammatical functions of nouns or pronouns which shows in what relation the noun or the pronoun is related to other words in the sentence.
  • There are three types of cases in English. They are,

  1. Nominative Case
  2. Objective Case
  3. Possessive Case

(i) Nominative Case:- When a noun or a pronoun is used as the subject of a verb, it is said to be in the nominative case.

e.g. Ram is playing.

Sita is coming.

You writes well.

She reads in class IX. etc.

(ii) Objective Case:- When a noun or a pronoun is used as the object of a verb or a preposition, it is said to be in the objective case.

e.g. 

She likes drawing.

Ram is eating a mango.

i am going to her. etc.

    Here, Drawing, mango and her are used as objective case. Drawing and mango are objects of verb but her is the object of preposition.

(iii) Possessive Case:- When the forms of nouns or pronouns are used to show relation or possession, they are said to be in the possessive case.

e.g. 

This is Sita's cottage.

She is my sister.

That is her cat. etc.

Note: (1) Nouns are used in same form in nominative and objective case. But in possessive case it takes apostrophe s ( 's ) or the "of construction."

Note: (2) Forms of pronouns are different in different cases.

Parts of speech :-                                           All the English words are divided into eight groups according to the work they do in the sentence, each group is called parts of speech. They are....... Noun Pronoun adjective Verb Adverb Preposition Conjunction Interjection Thus there are eight types of parts of speech. We can only determine the words by seeing it in the sentence that from which category the word belongs to. Because the same word may be belonging to the different parts of speech in the different sentence.
